The Real-time Symbiosis of Automatic and Voluntary Breathing and Musical Technology

[Max, Arduino, Wearable sensor circuit] (Duration: 10:16)

November 2024

This project introduces the Experimental Respiratory Monitoring Belt, made of wearable electronics containing a conductive rubber cord stretch sensor and a circuit designed with Arduino Uno that monitors automatic & voluntary breathing patterns through the lower ribcage area and associated muscles and converts the input resistor data signal into digital sound synthesis. This piece explores the symbiotic relationship between respiratory processes and digital sound art through subtle automatic & voluntary breathing patterns, ranging from regular to unconventional. By addressing the technical challenges and creative adaptations inherent in translating breath into music, this project not only provides insights into the broader implications of integrating real-time sensor data into artistic performance and interdisciplinary research but also, via performative demonstrations, aims to raise public awareness of respiratory health and the prevention of abnormal breathing.
